Tunnel Walk

Merseytravel ‘Under and Over the Mersey’ Tunnel Walk

Sunday 15th June 2008 at Queensway Tunnel

Love and Joy Gospel Choir and other gospel artists from the City Sings Gospel festival provided the soundtrack to Merseytravel’s public walk through the Queensway Tunnel and the ferry crossings over the Mersey.

Although the day started off with patchy rain, this did not stop Stavanger Gospel Choir from singing inspirational gospel music as the public started on their walk through the tunnel. Our street performers and marching bands entertained the 22,000 strong crowd inside the tunnel. Later performers Toscha, Magdalena Piskorczyk and Kathy King sang on the ferry’s return trip from Birkenhead. Everyone was there including Liverpool’s Phil Redmond.

Tunnel walkers included Sophie Curran and her two friends who were raising money for Cancer Support for Children. Sophie, a cancer survivor, proudly completed the walk with her new hip (photographed here on the ferry afterwards).

Liverpool Lighthouse worked in partnership with Merseytravel to offer entertainment and support in the form of volunteers. Volunteers performed many roles including handing out medals to the people coming out of the tunnel in Birkenhead and marshalling crowds

Neils Scales, Chief Executive and Director General of Merseytravel said “The professionalism and enthusiasm to get the job done so well was very much appreciated and I have received excellent feedback from far and wide with respect to your contribution”. We would like to say a special thanks to staff and volunteers from Liverpool Lighthouse.
