Gospel Music Heritage Exhibition: “Too Close to Heaven”

4th – 24th June 2008 at Liverpool Lighthouse
Time: 9:00- 16:30 Monday - Saturday FREE

CSG 08, in association with National Museums Liverpool, is bringing a major new exhibition by Viv Broughton to Liverpool Lighthouse. Covering the definitive history of black gospel music from 1700 to the present day, the multimedia exhibition will explore its origin in America, spread to the UK and Liverpool’s connection.  The exhibition will feature a large collection of previously un-exhibited original artifacts, documents, recordings, photographs and film that chart the progress of gospel music as it evolved from the first spirituals, all the way to the present day on both sides of the Atlantic.

The multimedia exhibition will include physically mounted objects as well as digital imageries carefully laid out across the Liverpool Lighthouse venue and will include digital interactive ‘sing with me’ and ‘alternative 2008 lyrics’ experiences for visitors.  Live interactive experiences with gospel music artists will be available at specific times during the duration of the exhibition.

Research compiled from wading through confirmed volumes of archive materials in the city's Museums and Libraries will uncover a rich ‘Liverpool Dimension’ to the history and heritage of Black Gospel Music. This dimension will explore links between Liverpool and gospel music because of its role in the slave trade.
